HOW DO YOU DEFINE "ART" FOR THESE AWARDS?

Generally, we are most focussed on the fine arts, which were Shirleyanne's greatest interest, including printmaking, drawing, illustration, painting, textile, sculpture, ceramics.

We have no plans to make awards in the fields of film, photography, digital arts and multi-media.

WHO CAN APPLY?

The awards are intended to support people who have decided to make a career in art.  Typically they will be early in career regardless of age, with potential for long term impact.
They could also be artists who have taken a break and are coming back to their work, or someone who has reached a stagnant plateau in their career and is looking for something to spark their career or create a game-changer.

WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA FOR THE AWARDS?  WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Our main objective is to create maximum impact with the awards, and so we want to understand what you expect to achieve with the award.  We expect it to be something that enhances your potential, perhaps launching the next stage of your career and enhancing your current position.

We do want to see a clearly worked out and explained plan for how the award will contribute to the development of your work.

CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT QUALIFIES FOR AN AWARD?

We are open to different types of application, especially in this first year of the awards.  Some examples we have thought of include (but are certainly not limited to):

  • Framing and other professional materials

  • Research

  • Travel

  • Website

  • Learning/training/workshop programmes that contribute to your skill set

However, please note that the awards are not designed to provide, replace or supplement income.

WILL I HAVE TO WRITE A REPORT AFTER MY PROJECT?

Successful applicants will be expected to provide evidence of their project.  This may be in the form of a report, or else photographs or other records of the project, which we will want to publish on this website.

HOW IS BAG RESPONDING TO THE COVID-19 CRISIS?

The BAG team is very conscious that many potential applicants may be facing delays in their plans for studies/workshops/art travel etc.  We have therefore decided to extend the closing date for 2020 applications until 15th November to allow more time to re-plan.  Our intention is to make awards before Christmas.
